“Nature is fuel for the soul, ” says Richard Ryan, professor of psychology at the University of Rochester. “Often when we feel depleted we reach for a cup of coffee, but research suggests a better way to get energized is to connect with nature,” he says.
This week, as I spent more time in nature, I agree with Richard that sitting outside for even 10 minutes, is more rejuvinating than drinking a cup of coffee. The breeze, the trees, the birds singing and flying by, the clouds, the sky, the butterflies, the scent of flowers, the colors…it is a sensory overload of beauty and aliveness.
Now, if I’m feeling tired, I head out to watch the sun hit the leaves of the trees, and breathe the fresh air and soak in some vitamin D, escaping outside for even 10 minutes, makes me feel more alive and in touch with the earth.
