There are so many reasons I don’t like sleeping in a strange bed in a hotel room: The different dust from home to adjust to, the bed being too hard or too soft for this little bear, the pillows being overstuffed when I prefer flat pillows, getting a crick in my neck from the pillow height, the allergic feathers in the pillows, and the quills that escape out of them and jab me in the face at night while I’m trying to sleep. As a vegan, having unpleasant dreams of those feathers being plucked out of birds. Then the feathers make me sneeze, and on top of that, the room temperature is often too low or too high and I toss around and wake up multiple times during the night turning the dials on the air conditioner and heater to get comfortable.
It had been a long day, after waking up at 5:30 am that morning in Canada, getting an hour ride to the airport to catch a flight to Los Angeles, then taking an hour long cab ride to the hotel, then taking a cab to a meeting, then stopping at Trader Joe’s to buy some groceries, and going for a tea and using the wifi at the coffee shop, then taking another cab for 20 minutes back to the hotel, then turning over the stiff bright white Egyptian cotton sheets and duvet cover on the king size bed and falling in. I closed my eyes and didn’t move an inch until I woke up 9 hours later, feeling completely rested.
I normally only sleep 4 to 5 hours a night, and have owl eyes to prove it, but this was the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in. This bed in Studio City Los Angeles, had 4 pillows, which I propped under my head and knees and slept all bundled up like a mummy. I left all my myriad chores at home with someone else, and enjoyed a few day’s much needed rest here. My mind was clear and my body was exhausted, a perfect scenario.
The headboard of the bed was one of the best parts of it, because it was the perfect height to do the ‘legs up the wall’ yoga pose. As I mentioned in my previous post about my bike tour in Studio City My hips were sore after riding the bike, and lying with my legs raised straight up the headboard for 20 minutes made them feel better. The headboard was high enough for me to extend my feet up on, and had a plastic finish, so I could wipe it down with soap and water, and enjoy the multipurpose resting and healing space in bliss.
